Operation Guide for Sheet & Tube Integrated Fiber Laser Cutting Machine

Introduction

Sheet and tube integrated laser cutting machine combines flat sheet cutting and tube profiling cutting in one single unit. Instead of purchasing independent sheet laser cutter and separate tube laser machine, metal fabricators, job shops, metal furniture factories, agricultural equipment manufacturers can process carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass sheets plus round tubes, square tubes, rectangular profiles on one machine, saving factory floor space and capital investment.

Correct operation, proper mode switching between sheet and tube function, regular maintenance directly decide cutting quality, part precision, machine service life and operator safety. This practical guide covers startup workflow, sheet cutting steps, tube cutting workflow, mode switch procedure, safety rules, daily maintenance and common troubleshooting for sheet tube integrated laser cutting machines.

  • Pre Operation Preparation & Safety Check

Before power on, operators must finish inspection to avoid collision, poor cutting quality or safety hazards.

1. Personal Protection

• Wear fiber laser specific safety goggles for 1064 nm wavelength. Wear flame resistant long sleeve work clothes; avoid synthetic fabric that melts under sparks.

• Tie up long hair; remove metal accessories such as bracelets and necklaces to prevent laser reflection burns.

• Keep fire extinguisher nearby; clear flammable materials within 5 meters around working zone.

2. Machine System Inspection

• Check chiller water level, water quality (use deionized water). Confirm no water leakage on cooling pipelines.

• Check gas supply: ensure oxygen, nitrogen or compressed air gas pressure meets technical requirement; inspect gas pipe joints for leakage.

• Check dust extraction system; make sure fume exhaust fan works normally.

• Check nozzle, ceramic ring and protective lens for dirt, scratch or crack. Replace damaged parts before cutting.

• Confirm machine grounding connection is reliable.

Note: Do NOT cut PVC, plastic, coated materials which produce toxic fumes.

  • Standard Startup Procedure

1. Switch on main power supply of machine cabinet. Release emergency stop button.

2. Start industrial control computer, launch laser cutting control software.

3. Turn on water chiller. Wait until water temperature stabilizes within recommended range before activating laser source.

4. Switch on servo drive system, perform machine homing.

5. Complete Z axis calibration for cutting head height sensing.

6. Open gas valves and set cutting gas pressure according to material thickness.

7. Enable laser source and wait for laser source warm up finish.

  • Operation Step 1: Flat Sheet Cutting Mode

1. Import DXF/DWG sheet cutting drawing into cutting software. Optimize layout, set lead in lines, micro joints and cutting parameters matching material & thickness.

2. Load metal sheet onto cutting worktable. Check sheet flatness; warped sheet will cause nozzle collision risk and incomplete cutting.

3. Run automatic edge finding function to detect sheet position.

4. Select suitable nozzle, set focus offset, gas pressure and cutting speed.

5. Run dry run simulation without laser output to check travel path without collision.

6. Start formal sheet cutting; monitor cutting status continuously. Stop immediately if spark abnormality or collision warning occurs.

  • Operation Step 2: Tube Cutting Mode

Important: Sheet tube integrated machine needs correct mode switching before tube processing.

1. Finish sheet mode homing, turn off laser output. Switch machine system from sheet cutting mode to tube cutting mode.

2. Load tube material into rotary chuck system. Clamp tube properly; avoid over clamping deformation for thin wall tubes.

3. Check chuck coaxiality; misalignment will lead to low precision tube cuts.

4. Import tube cutting DXF drawing (intersecting lines, holes, notches for round/square/rectangular tubes). Set tube specific cutting parameters.

5. Execute tube automatic positioning & rotation center calibration.

6. Perform dry run test for rotary movement.

7. Start tube cutting. Observe tube rotation status; stop if tube slips or vibrates heavily.

8. After cutting, finished tube pieces will drop; prevent falling work pieces hitting chuck assembly.

  • How to Switch Between Sheet Cutting and Tube Cutting Mode

Wrong mode switching is one of the most frequent operation errors on combo laser machines. Follow strict sequence:

1. Pause and finish all ongoing cutting tasks.

2. Close laser shutter, turn off laser output.

3. Complete full axis homing under current working mode.

4. Switch mechanical lock over from sheet work table to tube rotary station.

5. Switch software working mode: Sheet Mode ↔ Tube Mode.

6. Re perform homing for new working mode. Re calibrate Z axis and sensor.

7. Adjust nozzle, gas pressure and process parameters for next task material.

Do NOT switch mode during cutting processing, otherwise mechanical collision or program error may happen.

  • Machine Shutdown Sequence

Follow correct shutdown steps to protect laser source and mechanical components:

1. Stop all cutting programs.

2. Turn off laser source, wait for laser source cooling period.

3. Close gas supply valves, release residual pressure inside gas pipelines.

4. Shut down fume extraction system.

5. Turn off water chiller (do not shut chiller immediately after laser stops).

6. Exit cutting software, shut down industrial PC.

7. Turn off main power switch of machine cabinet.

  • Daily & Periodic Maintenance

Good maintenance extends service life of sheet tube integrated laser cutter and keeps stable cutting precision.

Daily Maintenance

• Clean cutting slag, metal scraps on worktable and tube chuck mechanism every shift.

• Clean dust on cutting head outer surface; inspect nozzle and ceramic ring condition.

• Check water chiller temperature and alarm logs.

• Keep machine cabinet door closed to prevent dust entering electrical components.

Weekly Maintenance

• Clean protective lens with qualified anhydrous ethanol.

• Check chuck jaws for wear; clean chuck rotary guide rails, add lubricant.

• Inspect gas pipeline joints for leakage.

Monthly Maintenance

• Replace or filter circulating cooling water.

• Check cable connections and grounding condition.
